Scaffold type: Solar panel access scaffold.

Area: Firle Crescent, Lewes, BN7.

Customer requirements: A solar panel company got in touch for a quotation as they required scaffolding to the front and rear of a 2-storey property so solar panels could be installed. We priced this job as follows: Front of the property £500 with 4 weeks hire and the back of the house £800 also with 4 weeks rental.

Difficulties and challenges we encountered: The scaffold to the front was simple with no challenges faced, however the rear of the property was a little more complex than normal as there was a single storey extension with a glass/perspex roof which we could not bear any weight onto whatsoever. So, we had to use an alternative solution when erecting this scaffolding as detailed below.

Work we undertook:

  1. Front of the semi-detached property: This scaffolding was 9.0 metres long by 5.0 metres high with 2 scaffold lifts. The first lift of this structure was a non-boarded lift that was placed just below a sloping roof area. Then we installed the top lift was which was a total of 8 scaffold boards wide. The reason this platform was so wide was because the building stepped in above the sloping roof. This working lift had fixed ladder access installed with fall protection rails and kicker boards fitted around the perimeter. Because of the extra width of the top working platform, we had to install 8-foot transoms instead of the usual 5ft tubes we normally use and then we added an additional inside ledger that was braced up to give extra support.
  2. Scaffold to the back of the house: This structure was 8.0 metres long by 2 lifts high, but the top lift was constructed using 6 metre beams that were strapped to the wall using shear plates, then 3.0 metre tubes were fixed to both pairs of beams. The lift above was then built by sitting the beams laterally on top of the lower beams that were fixed to the wall. This part of scaffolding was made up of a 6.0 metre beam section and a 4.0 metre beam section because the building length was 9.0 metres total. By using beams this meant no weight was placed on the glass/perspex below. The top lift was 6 scaffold boards wide with handrails and toe boards. We then created a walkway for the installers to be able to access the top lift and this was 4.0 metres long and was 5 boards wide, ladder access was also fixed to the end of the walkway.

Hire term: Both structures were hired to our customer for 4 weeks so that they had ample time to complete the solar installation.
