Scaffolding for roofing and painting works on the front of a terraced property in Brighton

Roof and decorating access, West Hill Place, Brighton

Scaffold type: Scaffold for painting and roof access.

Area: West Hill Place, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1.

Customer requirements: We were asked to provide a scaffold quotation on a 2-storey mid-terrace property in Brighton for roof works and safe access for painting the front. We quoted £500 for 2 working lifts with a 4-week rental period. This structure also required a pavement licence.

Difficulties and challenges we encountered: There were no significant difficulties faced with this scaffold; however, the road was small with cars parked on the opposite side, so our scaffolders needed to find a suitable place to park our truck so traffic could still pass through whilst we were erecting this structure.

Work we undertook:

  • As the framework was to be placed on a public pathway, we were required to apply for a pavement permit on behalf of the customer.
  • We erected a tower to the front elevation of this property that measured approximately 5.5 metres long by 5.5 metres high.
  • This featured two lifts, and both were to be used as working platforms.
  • The tower only had a depth of 4 scaffolding boards because the path was narrow.
  • Both access lifts had handrails and edge protection.
  • Toe boards were also fitted around the bottom edge of the working areas.
  • Two steel ladders were supplied on this structure for our customers to gain safe access.
  • A yellow ladder safety gate was installed on the first lift of the scaffolding.
  • Hi-visibility foam was attached to all the ground-level upright tubes along with yellow tredda plates for the tubes to rest on. These additional features are required on all scaffolds that are put up in pedestrianised areas.
  • We installed 8x 21ft scaffolding tubes as standards (vertical tubes) to create this tower.

Hire term: Our customer required this structure for a maximum of 4 weeks hire to allow them ample time to finish repairs and paint the front of this house.
