We installed a 3-lift scaffold with a tabletop platform to the gable end and rear of this building in Wilbury Gardens, Hove, East Sussex, BN3, for painting purposes.

Scaffold type: Scaffolding to allow painting and decorating works.

Area: Wilbury Gardens, Hove, East Sussex, BN3.

Customer requirements: This property in Hove required a scaffold to be erected to allow access to the gable end and part of the rear of the building so that painting and decorating works could be undertaken. This was quite a tall building so we initially had to build a normal gable end scaffold with a further hop-up added at the very top so the client could reach the apex. A small return scaffolding was also required at the rear of this property which had to be built on a single storey flat roof to allow access to the back wall for decorating.

Difficulties and challenges we encountered: We did not have many issues with this particular scaffold, as access to the property was fairly simple and we could park our trucks close to the outside of the building. Although the alleyway where our scaffolding was being erected was on the small side, we still had enough room to get our equipment through to build the structure along the length of the gable end, whilst still leaving access for the homeowner to walk underneath.

Work we undertook: We built a 9-metre-long scaffold with 3 working lifts to the gable end of this property along with a smaller hop-up at the very top and also a single lift to the rear elevation. On the day of erection our scaffolders arrived on site and built the 1st lift of this scaffold, which was five boards wide, and even though the scaffolding was between two gable ends of two neighbouring properties and was touching both of them, we still installed double handrails for safety. We then erected a further platform which was the 2nd lift, and this was again fully boarded with safety protection rails installed, however when erecting this lift, we extended the 2 ledgers (the horizontal tubes) towards the rear of the property so that we could erect a 5-metre-long working platform off these ledgers directly onto a flat roof so access could be given to the rear wall. Toe boards and double rails were also installed on this small working platform. The third lift was then erected and above this we installed a single lift 4-metre-long hop-up / tabletop scaffold with the usual guard rails and toe boards added, and this was to give our client access to the very top apex section of the gable end. After we dismantled this scaffolding, the painters had to paint the areas where our transoms had been touching the wall.

Hire term: This decorators and painters scaffold structure was erected by our scaffolding Hove & Brighton team who allowed this client a 4-6 week hire period, as there was a lot of areas to paint and also the weather might not hold out for the duration of this project, so progress may have been slower than normal, so we allowed extra time if needed.
